English Language & Literature B at Isleworth & Syon School for Boys
Candidates study two units in Year 12 and two in Year 13. AS units: * Unit 1 - Poetry and Drama 1 (30%) * Unit 2 - Prose Study and Creative Reading (20%) A2 units: * Unit 4 - Period and Genre Study (20%) * Unit 5 - Poetry and Drama 2 (30%) How you will be assessed: Unit 1 is assessed by one 2 hour written paper (open text) Unit 2 and 3 are internally assessed (coursework) Unit 4 is assessed by one 2 hour written paper (closed text) (Candidates will be prepared to sit written papers in January) Why take this subject: This course will appeal to those students who have an interest in reading a wide variety of literature from the past and present. Indeed, to fulfil the Assessment Objectives for this course, candidates are expected to be willing to read beyond the texts prescribed by the syllabus. It is a subject that will also appeal to those who enjoy expressing their opinions and justifying their comments on texts. Students might opt to study English Literature to keep their options open for further study - English Literature is a popular qualification for entry to a wide range of courses in higher education or for future careers. Success in this course of study demonstrates ability to respond to complex ideas. Any other information: Currently, the staff teaching English Literature are Mr McLoughlin, Mr Hall, Mrs Saunders and Mrs Lonergan. Students normally have two teachers for this subject.
