French AS and A Level at Ripley St Thomas CE Academy

Course description

The AS French course aims to take you beyond GCSE and prepare you for A2 and University studies should you wish. It develops all of your language skills as well as your research and independent learning skills and gives you an insight into the language and the culture of France. It is a challenging but rewarding course.

Course content

AS: Paper 1: Listening, Reading and Translation into English [40% of AS]
Paper 2: Translation into French and Essay on Literature OR Film [30% of AS] + Speaking test: Discussion on topics studied at AS [30% of AS]

A2: Paper 1: Listening, Reading and Translations from and into French [40% of A level]
Paper 2: Essays on Literature and Film [30% of A level]
+ Speaking test: Discussion on topics studied at A level [30% of A level]

Entry requirements

GCSE French Grade B.

Assessment

All skills are assessed in final exams at the end of Year 12 (AS) and Year 13 (A Level). All of the language skills are practised in class – listening, reading, speaking and writing – and classes are conducted mainly in French. A range of activities is offered including group and pair work, in-depth grammar practice and use of online resources, independent work and regular assessment.

 

Future opportunities

Languages open a lot of doors including working within Marketing, Commerce, Teaching, Advertising, Tourism, Translation and Industry to name a few.
