Vocational Studies (Public Service) BTEC Level 1 Extended Certificate at Newcastle-under-Lyme College

Course description

The course aims to equip learners with the skills, knowledge and understanding to begin to explore career opportunities within the public service sector. You will also gain a qualification to enable you to progress onto a level 2 programme and it will also help learners develop personal skills, which can be used later in all forms of employment. The course also focuses on improving learner’s skills in maths, English and I.C.T. This is a one year, full- time course. The units you will study include Forensic science, Personal skills for public services, Map reading using ordinance survey maps, Introduction to expedition skills, Public services incidents, Improving health and fitness for entry into the uniformed public services. You will also continue to improve your maths and English skills in structured lessons alongside your course and where appropriate you will take further qualifications in these subjects. If you plan to progress to a Level 2 course you will need to demonstrate a satisfactory level of improvement in English and maths by the end of the year.You will learn through a range of well-balanced studies which combine practical skills such as map reading and expeditions and theoretical knowledge.

Entry requirements

Ideally You will need one GCSE at grade D or an Entry Level 3 Vocational qualification and be aged between 16 and 23 years old at the beginning of the course.


You must pass all the units to gain this diploma. To pass each unit you will produce a portfolio of evidence including a range of written assignment work, presentations, project work, group work and practical-based assessments.

Financial information

Newcastle Maintenance Allowance (NMA): Anyone with a household income under £21,000 can receive £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment. The payments will be subject to full attendance on your course. A range of other financial support is available, depending on your personal circumstances.

Having successfully completed this course you could progress to the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Public Services or go on to do other further education courses.
