Course description

The Children and Young People's Workforce encourages children to extend their knowledge and experience. This will typically be within a nursery, playgroup or childminding setting. The child development skills of those involved, leads to growth in the capabilities of the children they work with. The work itself is fulfilling, rewarding and enjoyable. Whether you are new to Childcare or are already established within the industry, by learning you can improve your ability and learn how to ensure the best care and education is delivered by you. Learning doesn’t only give you the basics for doing the job but also prepares you to meet new challenges when they arise.

This qualification is for experienced nursery workers who demonstrate a sound knowledge base and competence in looking after children. It qualifies an individual to work as a nursery nurse or nursery officer and to supervise others. Most of our trainees complete this qualification within 12 months. The course covers the care and development of children from birth to 19 years.

Entry requirements

Key skills Level 2 in Maths & English (GCSE Grade C or above).


Work Based Learning visited by a Trainer/Assessor at your workplace.

Future opportunities

The course offers you a specialist work-based qualification to support a career related to childcare or to progress onto studying an NVQ level 4 or a Diploma in a related subject such as Health and Social Care or Youth Work. With further training, you could continue to develop your career by working for a children's nursery or to support further study for entering a career in teaching. The course is work based which means that you can earn and learn at the same time whilst developing the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers in all areas of child care are looking for.
