Business BTEC Level 3 First Extended Diploma at Nelson and Colne College

Course description

The UK has the 6th largest economy in the world, consisting of micro, small, medium and large businesses and organisations operating across the private, public and third sectors and employing 29.7 million people. The CBI’s Education and Skills Survey 2013 revealed self-management, business and customer awareness, team-working and problem-solving as key attributes that employers look for in potential employees. As the UK’s economy rebalances following the financial crash of 2008 and businesses adapt to the disruption and opportunities presented by emerging technologies, there are many opportunities for entrepreneurs and employees with a sound understanding of finance, marketing, sales and management.

This course gives you the opportunity to learn about the world of business and apply your knowledge to real-life business situations. You will study a range of interesting modules covering all aspects of business. This is a practical course with an emphasis on real life examples of business, where you will be encouraged to think creatively and it will provide you with strong employability skills which will set you up for employment or university study.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade C or above including Maths and English or a Level 2 Diploma and Level 2 Maths and English.


Assessments will take the form of assignments including: presentations, reports, discussions and roleplays. The type and content of these assignments will vary depending on the particular units that are being assessed.

They are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. For every assignment you will receive an assignment brief which will clearly outline what you have to do for the assessment and how you can achieve your grades. On the BTEC Extended Diploma your final qualification will show three grades e.g. D*D*D*, DMM, MMP. The 3 grades reflect the fact that your BTEC Diploma is equivalent to 3 A Levels. Progression onto HE required a minimum MMM grade profile.
