Theatrical, Special effects and Hair and Media Makeup VTCT Level 3 Diploma at Leeds City College

Course description

This course will prepare you for a career in the industry. You can expect to receive expert knowledge from tutors on makeup techniques including airbrushing, special effects, basic prosthetics, hair and wigs.

During your time at Leeds City College, you will have the opportunity to utilise your skills outside the classroom. Due to our extensive links in the industry, you can expect to work in a TV studio, on theatre productions, fashion shoots and many more invaluable work experience opportunities.

Our Level 2 Hair and Media Makeup course is highly recommended for all candidates, irrespective of academic profile. The skills learnt at level 2 are a key foundation upon entry to level 3. Please contact us to discuss your experience or any queries you may have.

Please note: you will be required to wear a compulsory industry uniform at college. Photography costs for your professional portfolio may also be involved.

Course content

Course themes:

• Fashion photographic make-up

• Media make-up

• Style and fit postiche (wigs)

• Creative and fantasy hair design

• Camouflage make-up

• Apply prosthetic pieces and bald caps

• Apply air brush makeup to the face

• Design and apply face and body art

• Client care and communication

Entry requirements

Entry requirements are a minimum of four GCSE grades 9-4 (A – C) including maths and English.

Be prepared to attend an interview to determine your skillset and review your portfolio of creative evidence.


Practical application

Projects will be set to improve your practical skills, knowledge and understanding. For practical assessments, you will be observed and assessed by an experienced tutor.

Theoretical examinations

External examination papers will assess your knowledge and understanding. This applies to the following units:

  • Camouflage
  • Airbrush
  • Fashion and photographic


As part of this qualification, you are required to produce a portfolio of evidence. A portfolio will confirm the knowledge, understanding and skills that you have learnt throughout the course.

Future opportunities

On completion of this exciting level 3 course, you will have the necessary skills and experience to work within the creative makeup industry and expand your skills and knowledge in fashion, theatre and photography studios.

You will be able to progress on to a higher education course, such as a foundation degree in media makeup, or gain employment as a qualified makeup artist.

Alternatively, you may decide to undertake other vocational related pathways that will enhance your professional skillset.
