Extended Project Qualification at Bitterne Park School

Course description

The Level 3 Extended Project carries up to 70 UCAS points and involves students in planning, researching and writing a university-style dissertation on an area where opposing points of view can be analysed and evaluated.

The Extended Project allows students to produce a piece of extended writing (5000 words) on a topic of personal interest. The Extended Project involves 120 guided learning hours, including a taught element of up to 40 hours. This taught element will include development of: research skills, project management skills, writing skills and presentation skills.

Many of these skills will also be covered in A-level courses particularly if there are lengthy pieces of coursework to submit. The course begins during the Autumn term of year 12 and the final project is submitted for moderation in February of year 13. The Extended Project also includes a presentation of work to peers and teachers.

This qualification will develop your planning, researching, critical thinking, analysis, synthesis, evaluation and presentation skills allowing you to extend your learning in a direction of personal interest.

Entry requirements

Minimum 8 A*-C grades at GCSE, including English and Maths. This project suits students who are organised, independent workers, self-motivated and who are keen to pursue in-depth research into a particular area of interest.
