Media Studies AS/A Level (WJEC) at Benton Park School

Course description

AS

MEST 1:

This is the exam module where students will answer five questions in total; four on a piece of unseen media and one on a case study they prepare in advance. This is worth 50% of their AS grade and 25% of their final A level grade.  

MEST 2:

This is the coursework module where students will create a research and planning portfolio and then create two pieces of media from either a film, print piece of e-media which they get to choose.  

A2

MEST 3:

This is the exam module for A2 where students will answer four questions in total which include three on key media theories on an unseen text and one on a case study they prepare on advance.

 MEST 4:

This is the coursework module for A2 where students come up with a question of their choice to answer as part of a 2000 word essay, they then have to create a piece of media of their choice to back up the findings of their essay.

Entry requirements

Access to the Sixth Form is based on prior academic achievement, behaviour and attendance records. Students must attain at least 5 A* - C grades including English and Maths. Some subjects may have specific criteria.

Assessment

Across the two years students will be assessed by examinations and coursework with equal weighting given to both:

50% - Examination

50% - Coursework

Students can use Media Studies to progress into a career within the media in various forms including:   Researcher Presenter Journalist Scriptwriter Director Producer

  It is a varied and interesting career choice but also very popular.
