Chemistry A Level at Lawnswood School

Course description

The course develops ideas from GCSE, with much more emphasis on calculations and patterns in the periodic table. Students will study chemistry at the macro- and subatomic level, using models to interpret abstract ideas. Practical work includes titrations, organic synthesis and tests for organic compounds. Development of How Science Works skills are embedded.

Entry requirements

Grade 6 or 6-6 AQA Triple or Combined Science GCSE

Grade 6 or higher maths GCSE


There are two aspects of assessment. The A level is assessed terminally (at the end of Y13) with three exam papers covering the entire specification.

Additionally, there is a practical endorsement that is independent of the A level grade and is a pass/fail certificate. This is based on your demonstration and development of practical investigative skills over 12 required practical investigations. These take place regularly throughout the two years.

Course books are ordered within the first few weeks from CGP at a cost of £10 for each year of study.

Future opportunities

This course is recommended for students wishing to study medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and vetinary science. However, as a well respected qualification encompassing many skills, it is also taken by students wishing to have a broad range of AS qualifications.
