Public Services BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate at Portsmouth College
This qualification will set you on the path towards careers in the armed forces or the police and emergency services. Many of our level 2 students aim to progress to level 3 before seeking opportunities in employment or at university.
The course has four core units:
- Public Service Skills
Here you will explore the skills that are required to be a member of the public services, including teamwork and communication.
- Career Planning for the Public Services
- Employment in the Uniformed Public Services
These two units are closely linked and provide you with guidance in relation to the career you wish to enter. You will cover the application and interview procedures for a range of Public Service roles.
- Improving Health and Fitness for Entry to the Uniformed Public Services
A practical unit focusing on the development of your own personal fitness. You will participate in a fitness training programme and practise some actual physical entry tests for your chosen Public Service.
Through some of the optional units you will begin to learn how to survive in the wilderness, and how to navigate in the mountains and in open water.
- Adventurous Activities and Teamwork for the Public Services
- Expedition Skills in Public Services
- Fundamentals of Nautical Studies
Five GCSEs at an average of grade E, to include English Language.
The majority of units are internally assessed but for some you will be required to take an exam, set and marked by the exam board.
Our numerous trips and activities include Army, Navy and Police days, and visiting guest speakers. There are also great opportunities through the College’s Outdoor Adventurous Activities programme, including: orienteering, mountain biking, camping, rock climbing, scuba diving, sailing and canoeing. You will be encouraged to participate in the College’s Sports Academy teams.
