Business Studies (BTEC National Level 3) at Morecambe Community High School

Course description

BTEC nationals are suited to able, hardworking and well-motivated students who wish to develop more practical business skills. This qualification is made up of three units a year and requires students to investigate business decisions made by actual firms and managers in real businesses.

Course content

Unit 1 Exploring Business Activity – this investigates how businesses operate within the marketing and economic environment and remain successful

Unit 2 Investigating Business Resources – this explores the resources that a company uses to make it competitive and how these resources enhance their service

Unit 3 Introduction to marketing – this investigates the ways companies promote their product and services and the creative ways they create a brand for customers


Unit 4 Effective people and communication – this expects students to explore the different methods of communication used by businesses and use the methods to

Unit 12 Internet marketing – This looks at how businesses market themselves through the internet and must create their own Internet image.

Unit 36 Starting your own business – this explores the potential business ventures that could be successful in your own area. A business plan needs to be completed for the chosen business

Future opportunities

As this is an investigation into all business areas it gives a clear knowledge of each area, making sure that if you continued this at university you would have a sound knowledge for each. It also lends itself to study a specialist area, such as, marketing. This course also lends itself to management as it involves critical thinking and decision making.

Business studies obviously opens doors into the world of Business but could be a step to management posts. The areas of business are vast and will have been covered within the course, for example, accounting, marketing, recruitment.
