French at Maiden Erlegh School
The study of French offers students the opportunity to develop not only knowledge but also valuable transferable skills. Students develop communication and research skills, and learn techniques for the acquisition of new languages, which can benefit them in a range of future careers. Competition from Europe is on the increase and an ability to communicate on an equal footing is clearly an advantage.
Sixth Form French complements a range of other subjects and is not solely the preserve of the most able linguists. Themes met in some subjects are further explored within a French context, leading to a deeper understanding. French equips the student with a firm grasp of the language and an understanding of the culture and socio-political issues of our nearest European neighbour. The course lays sound foundations for students who wish to continue languages in Higher Education.
In order to cope with the rigours of AS level French a good level of linguistic competence is essential. We expect students to have gained at least a grade B on Higher GCSE papers in French and a grade C or above in GCSE English Language. Students should also be keen to deepen their knowledge of the language and their understanding of the culture and society of the French speaking world.
