A2 - Drama and Theatre Studies at Chase Terrace Technology College

Course description

Unit 3– Exploration of Dramatic Performance (40% of A2 or 20% of total A Level) Students build on the knowledge gained at AS to create a new piece of theatre which is performed to an invited audience. Students are marked on the creative process of making the piece of theatre as well as their performance skills. Unit 4– Theatre Text in Context (60% of A2 or 30% of total A Level) Students will study a set text from the point of view of a director in both an academic and a practical way. They will also study performance conditions in three different periods of history This Unit is assessed in the form of a two and a half hour written exam which asks students to explore the set text from the point of view of a director in both a practical and academic way. Evaluate and review a play seen in performance, making comparisons to the original performance conditions of the play. Please note that due to the practical nature of the course, A-Level Drama & Theatre Studies does require considerable extra curricular commitment.

Entry requirements

The Drama and Theatre Studies course complements the work that students undertake in their Edexcel GCSE. However, the course is also open to those who did not opt to take the subject in Key Stage 4.

Future opportunities

You could take this course with other advanced level courses, which could be related to the performing arts, to prepare for higher education in the arts or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to the performing arts such as working in the Film, Television or Theatre industries. You may also like to look at joining a theatre group to increase your drama and theatre experience. The course offers a distinct subject content which provides you with the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers from lots of industries are looking for.
