Media Studies A Level at Strode College

Course description

This subject draws upon your existing experience of media to develop your abilities to respond analytically and critically to media products. You will explore a wide variety of media, including digital technologies, drawing on the fundamental concepts informing the study of the media: texts, industryand audiences. You will also gain a greater appreciation of the media and develop your own production skills through creative production work.

Course content

Areas of study include analysis of case studies to consider how and why groups of people, issues and events are shown to us the way that they are and how people may respond to this. For example, why do some people find funny what others find offensive? Why are teenagers stereotyped as hooded thugs? Who makes these representations and what is the impact upon the audience? Past case studies have included The Simpsons, Team America, Vogue and My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding.
You will have opportunities to research, plan and produce your own work using the latest video production technology, such as a film trailer and a music video. You will also study particular media industries in depth to explore their wider social and cultural impact and the relationships between text, industry and audience. You may consider things such as how the internet and digital technology have impacted upon the film industry, why charity advertising is regulated differently to other adverts and is The X Factor really a talent contest or a freak show?
Video production and desktop publishing are an integral part of the course and we have a large suite of Apple Mac computers to support you with your learning. You will have opportunities for national trips to cinemas, TV studios and media industry events. Previous trips have included visits to the Warner Bros Harry Potter Studio Tour, BBC Broadcasting House in London and being in the audience for the recording of a TV show. Lively discussions in friendly groups are a key feature of this course. We have hosted guest speakers from the industry including journalists, DJs, independent film makers and the pyrotechnics team behind Skyfall.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grades A* - C or equivalent including English Language.


The course will be assessed by written exams and coursework.

Future opportunities

You can progress to a range of higher education courses including specialist courses in Media and Film, or related areas such as English, Communication and Cultural Studies, Business and Marketing and Creative Industries. Past students have studied related degrees at universities of Bournemouth, Westminster, Manchester and the West of England in Bristol.
