Bricklaying Level 1 Diploma at Newbury College

Course description

This course provides students wishing to join the construction industry as bricklayers with the broad knowledge, understanding and skills to become qualified within Site Bricklaying. Units studied range from: Know how to carry out safe working practices in construction to knowledge of building methods and construction technology and from building methods and construction technology to carry out basic cavity walling. All tools and equipment will be available during the course to allow learners to complete successfully


This is an introductory course that will prepare you for a career in brickwork.

Subjects covered include:

  1. Building methods 2, Damp courses
  2. Block and brick laying
  3. Setting out

Entry requirements

Students will need to have four GCSE passes at grade E or above, preferably including Maths and English. Alternatively, students will be accepted on to the course if they have an equivalent vocational qualification at pass grade or above, and Functional Skills Maths and English, preferably at Entry Level 3. All students must have achieved, or show the ability to achieve, Maths and English to GCSE grade E or equivalent. Where a student has not yet fulfilled this requirement, a functional skills qualification is a mandatory part of this course.


Assessment includes coursework, oral examination, practical and written examinations.

Future opportunities

Level 2 (QCF) Diploma in Site Bricklaying or to an Apprenticeship.
