*Citizenship GCSE (Short) at The Westwood Academy (West Coventry Sixth Form)
GCSE Citizenship is a short course worth half a GCSE which is taught for 1 year. Pupils have two lessons a week and cover a variety of topics:
- Human Rights
- Power, Politics and the Media
- The Global Village
- Citizenship Activity.
Citizenship is a vital part of life. Being a good citizen will enable pupils to make a valuable contribution to the world. The subject examines current events in the media and gives pupils the opportunity to discuss important issues. Citizenship has produced an excellent level of performance in GCSE exams and compliments History, Geography, RE and Business Studies.
A look at multi-cultural Britain and the need for respect and understanding. The topic also looks at our legal rights including employment
Power. Politics and the Media
The nature of democracy, the role of parliament and how the law is made. The topic also looks at the freedom and importance of the press.
The Global Village
A look at environmental issues, Fair Trade and debt reduction. We also examine the position of the UK in the world.
Pupils will work in groups to plan, carry out and evaluate a citizenship task. This has varied from delivering presentations on Fair Trade to Year 7 pupils to arranging sporting events.
COURSEWORK: 40% - One assignment spread over the 2 years.
EXAMINATION: 60% - 1hr 45min covering the three themes.
