Further Mathematics AS level at Chatham Grammar School for Girls
This course aims to develop understanding of Mathematics in a way which promotes confidence and fosters enjoyment. Topics studied include algebra, functions, co-ordinate geometry, trigonometry, sequences and series, calculus, logarithms and vectors. Students also choose either Mechanics or Statistics. Students are expected to be able to work logically and accurately. Mathematics is a valuable asset in any career with accountancy, banking, insurance, engineering and teaching all popular choices.
High achieving Mathematicians will have the opportunity to study Further Mathematics. This gives students the opportunity to extend and deepen their knowledge of the subject and is ideal for those wishing to take courses involving Mathematics at university. Decision Mathematics and Pure Mathematics are studied.

Students will develop the ability to work logically and sequentially. Ability to analyse problems and apply the correct methods for their solution. Ability to work accurately. Acquisition of mathematical skills.
All students must obtain five C grade passes at GCSE (a GNVQ qualification will also be considered). We expect students to have achieved an A grade at GCSE in Mathematics.
Please note that students who wish to study Further Mathematics must also study Mathematics.
All examinations are 1½ hours per module
Mathematics is a very valuable commodity on the employment market, being particularly useful for banking, accountancy, insurance, actuarial work, engineering (when studied with Physics) and teaching (in which it is a shortage subject).
It is not unfair to say that Mathematics is an asset for any career. A Times Educational Supplement Survey discovered that graduates in any subject who had passed A level Mathematics earned on average 10% more than other graduates
