Course description

NCFE Level 3 Applied General Certificate in Music Technology.

This qualification enables learners to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of working in the music technology sector. It is suitable for learners who are motivated by applied learning and learning through hands-on creative experiences related to the work of a music technologist and music production.

Course content

This Applied General qualification is equivalent in size to an A Level. It is aimed at post-16 year olds studying a Key Stage 5 curriculum with an interest in creative music production and performance.

- Unit 1: Using a digital audio workstation.
- Unit 2: Creating music.
- Unit 3: Multi-track audio recording, mixing and mastering.
- Unit 4: Sound creation.
- Unit 5: Live sound performance technology.
- Unit 6: Digital music business.

Entry requirements

Grade 4 or C in English and a creative arts subject such as Art, Performing Arts, Drama or Music. It is preferable that students will have achieved a grade C or above in music or music technology at GCSE or equivalent.


Assessment for all units is mandatory - externally assessed portfolio of evidence.

Future opportunities

This qualification fulfils entry requirements for a range of Higher Education courses, either by meeting entry requirements in their own right or accepted alongside and adding value to other qualifications at the same level. Degree courses could include:
