Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) at Hayesfield Girls' School and Mixed Sixth Form

Course description

Undertaking a research project is excellent material for a job application, competitive interview or UCAS personal statement. You gain skills that speed up your transition post-18, and this qualification gives you extra UCAS points

Candidates with an EPQ receive lower offers at a number of top UK Universities including Southampton, Reading, Queen Mary College (London), Sheffield, Bristol and Reading.

Please note this course is equivalent to half an A Level and is in addition to your main choices

Course content

How to form an investigation into an agreed topic of your choice; information literacy and library research skills; referencing, bibliography making, citation; use of surveys and questionnaires; ICT safety; ethics of research; presentation skills.

All projects are submitted in November of Year 13.

Entry requirements

Letter of application.


Either a 5,000 word academic essay or an artefact (art portfolio, build project, architecture model) with a 2,000 word commentary.

A 16 page A4 Production Log.

Future opportunities

AN EPQ can link to any topic and hence support progression to any future pathway.

Students plan their EPQ to support their post-18 choices e.g. applications to Medicine, Veterinary Science, Oxbridge, creation of portfolios for Art and Design. Courses; Architecture; Health and Social Care, including Midwifery; Engineering (very useful for work placements).
