Italian IB Standard Ab Initio at Anglo European School

Course description

Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

The Ab Initio course also places great emphasis on the grammar, vocabulary and cultural aspects of language learning.

Course content

This course runs for four hours per cycle.   It will focus on strengthening students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Italian. Another important aspect of the course is the development of students’ cultural awareness of Italy. The main focus is on the acquisition of language required for situations in everyday life.

The topic areas covered are the Individual and Society, Leisure and Work and Urban and Rural Environment.

The course is demanding in terms of rapid acquisition of new vocabulary and requires a great level of commitment. Students also need to be highly participative in lessons in order to get the most from their language learning.

Entry requirements

The course is aimed at students with no previous experience of learning Italian.


Oral Assessment (25%):

Individual oral exam (10 minutes)


Paper 1 Text Handling (30%)

Comprehension of four written texts


Paper 2 Written Production (25%) 

Two compulsory writing tasks.


Written Assignment (20%)
