Course description

Always wanted to work with animals? Get to grips with the basics of animal care and look forward to a fulfilling career. There’s more to this course than classroom work. You’ll be learning by doing - handling the animals in the College’s collection of small mammals and exotic species, undertaking work experience placements and going on visits such as to Blackpool Zoo, Yorkshire Wildlife Park and Whirlow Hall Farm

Course content

What you will study 

Mandatory units are:

• Maintain Animal Health and Welfare
• Animal Feeding & Accommodation
• Animal Behaviour and Handling
• Working in the Animal Care Industry
• Health & Safety for Land-based Industries
• Animal Breeds and Grooming
• Care of Exotic Animals
• British Wildlife Species, Habitats and Rehabilitation
• Caring for Zoo Animals


You will also gain an insight into careers in the animal care industry by carrying out research, visiting animal establishments and listening to guest speakers.

Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. If you do not already have a GCSE at grade A*-C in these subjects, you will need to attend sessions allocated on your timetable. These are varied and designed to cater for all ability levels. You will receive advice and guidance regarding the correct level for you.

Skills in Maths and English will support your full-time course, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C.  This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.


Entry requirements

5 GCSEsA*-D or 9-3, including English or Maths or equivalent
Appropriate Level 1 qualification, plus Level 1 English and maths or equivalent


There is an exam element and the skills and knowledge gained from eth mandatory units will be assessed via a graded synoptic test.

The optional unit assessments are assignment-based.

Financial information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, residentials etc which are payable by all students.
Any student entered/registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and then withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any resit examination will incur a cost.

Future opportunities

Further study

Many students who gain a Merit grade progress on to the Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Animal Management delivered at Wakefield College.

Career opportunities

Kennel assistant, animal nursing assistant, animal groomer, pet shop assistant and zookeeper are just some possibilities. You could work in boarding kennels and catteries, veterinary practices, charities such as the RSPCA, Guide Dogs for the Blind or wildlife sanctuaries, grooming parlours, pet shops, zoos and wildlife parks.
