HNC/HND Music Production at New College Telford

Course description

The HND is a full-time course taken over two years. Higher Education gives you important transferable skills which can give you the edge in the fast-changing world of employment. People with Higher Level qualifications earn on average more than people who don't and their incomes are greater as they get older.

You will meet new people and encounter new ideas - and learn more about the subject you are interested in. You will also get an opportunity to prove to yourself and employers that you can cope with complex information, meet deadlines, work independantly and as part of a team, solve problems as well as speak, write and create with confidence.

The lecturers have a wide range of commercial experience which informs the delivery and design of this course.

There is a dedicated recording studio space for the sole use of Higher Level Music Production students. There is also a dedicated Higher Education Music Production Mac suite. All Music Production Macs run Logic Pro X and Pro Tools 12.

Course content

Develop the skills and knowledge needed for a career in the music industry, or one of the many related industries. Become and skilled practitioner and develop specialist knowledge and transferable skills. Cover theoretical and practical aspects of advanced audio engineering and production, post production, marketing, music business, mastering, live sound, post-production and music for sound and television. You will expand your knowledge and expertise through different styles of music; get to grips with the largely freelance nature of the music production market and complete assignments based around industry standard practice. The course keeps pace with the ever-changing professional market by the use of industry-standard equipment and software, to work to professional standards. You will learn from industry professionals with expert knowledge or the realities of working in various areas of the music industry. This qualification is coursework-based. Assessment is continuous throughout the course with detailed feedback to help you refine your skills. All students are expected to undertake independent study in their own time.

Entry requirements

UCAS Points:48 (Up to 8 from AS Levels). Example minimum expectations would be:ED3:- PPP,A2:- 3 E grades,SD3:- 3 Pass grades. You also need five GCSEs at grade C or equivalent level 2 qualifications to include English and Maths. Students from non-traditional routes will be considered on their individual merit, depending on their experience.

Future opportunities

The HND Music Production opens doors to a range of careers in the music industry, such as work in audio engineering and music production, television/film/game sound, subject journalism and specialist retail. Former students have gained employment in broadcast media, started an independent studio and worked successfully as freelance engineers and producers. Many HND students choose to 'top-up' their HND to a full B.A./B.A. (Hons.) by continuing their studies at university.
