Applied Science at The Castle School

Course description

This broad-based qualification provides a more vocational perspective than the other Science A Levels, with less emphasis on examination performance and a greater amount of marks awarded for portfolio work. Through studying practical examples students enjoy more opportunities to actively experience the ways in which Science is applied in many areas of life and in particular in employment. A level Applied Science is a good choice for students considering higher education in some science-based courses, including biochemical sciences food technology, human physiology, sports science and materials science. It is advisable that individuals check entry requirements with universities before entering the course. This qualification may also help and access other vocational courses such as Nursing or Paramedicine.

The units studied all draw on aspects of biological, chemical and physical science. The main themes include Health, Manufacturing, Communications, The Environment (including an ecological study) and Analysis and Detection. Lessons are a combination of practical work, research, discussions and external visits.

Entry requirements

Minimum grade CC in GCSE Science, and grade C in Mathematics and English.
