German A level at Hartismere School
What is in the course?
The course aims to develop your communication skills in German, as well as extending your cultural knowledge and your awareness of contemporary issues.
AS One Year Course
Topics include: Media; TV, advertising and communication technology. Popular culture: cinema, music and fashion/trends. Healthy living/lifestyle/ exercise, health and well-being and holidays. Family; relationships, marriage and friendship.
Unit 1: This concentrates on the skills of listening, reading and writing through the theme 'young people today' which includes all of the topics listed above.
Unit 2: This concentrates on your oral communication skills and is based on the same topics.
A Level Two Year Course
Environment: pollution, energy and protecting the planet. The multi-cultural society: immigration, integration and racism. Wealth and poverty, law and order and the impact of scientific and technological progress.
Unit 3: Develops further your listening, reading and writing skills through the topics listed above.
Unit 4: Focuses on spoken French / German through the study of 2 cultural topics such as cinema, literature, geography and history.
What can you expect from the lessons?
Teaching will take the form of class discussions, listening and reading exercises, using the web; language manipulation practices; conversation classes with the Foreign Language Assistant. We can also arrange for work experience in Germany.
Grade B or above at GCSE and a genuine interest in the language.
Assessment is through a mix of exam and some coursework.
Through learning a foreign language you acquire transferable skills useful in most fields, particularly commerce, industry, personnel, management, teaching, research, journalism and the hospitality industry. It also combines well with disciplines such as business studies, international law, economics, mathematics, chemistry and geography, leading to combined degrees with careers opportunities in Europe and beyond.
