Further Mathematics A level at Valentines High School

Course description

GCE Further Mathematics builds upon those skills acquired while studying GCE Mathematics. This is a challenging course for those with a real interest in and aptitude for the subject. It equips you with skills such as logistical analysis and deduction, data handling, mathematical modelling and problem solving, all of which can be applied in almost any field of work.

Course content

Year 12 AS Outline

Further Maths is available only to those students who gain A* grade at GCSE. You will study it in separate lessons in addition to your normal AS Maths lessons.

Year 13 A2 Outline

Modules available are in Further Pure Maths (FP1 & FP3), Statistics (S2 & S3), Mechanics (M2) and Decision Maths (D1).

Entry requirements

GCSE grade A* in Maths.


The Maths department follows the Edexcel Scheme with assessments taking place in May/June.

Future opportunities

A Level Mathematics is a much sought after qualification for entry to a wide variety of full-time courses in Higher Education. There are also many areas of employment that see a Mathematics A Level as an important qualification and it is often a requirement for the vocational qualifications related to these areas. Higher Education courses or careers that either require A Level Mathematics or are strongly related include Economics, Teaching, Medicine, Psychology, Architecture, Environmental Studies, Engineering, Computing and Accountancy. If you should wish to continue your study of Mathematics after A Levels you could follow a course in Mathematics at degree level or even continue further as a postgraduate and get involved in mathematical research.
