Art & Design Creative Design for Gaming Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma at Wigan & Leigh College

Course description

If you enjoy gaming and feel you have creative ideas for games then this could be the industry for you. This is one of the fastest growing sectors of the entertainment industry. You will discover how the creative process is an integral part of the gaming industry from idea generation to digital concept artwork.

Course content

The programme is part of the Art and Design Diploma and therefore is creative and design based. You will develop skills around drawing, the design process, character creation, gaming concepts and production of digital images and animation. You will study life drawing in both years and develop your 3D computer modelling skills in the second year.

Entry requirements


A minimum of 5 A*-C/ 9-4 GCSE subjects or equivalent including maths or English and an art related subject. Students will need to present a portfolio of work


Work is project based and is assessed throughout the course. A range of methods are used including externalprojects. You will develop a personal portfolio of work, which will help you pursue yourchosen career pathway.

Future opportunities

You will develop the skills to progress on to university and can choose a degree in video games design and other design based programmes.

Further information

You will have an opportunity to go on a visit to a European city in second year, trips have included Barcelona, Berlin and Venice. Students are expected to have an art kit with basic essentials. Some specialist materials are provided and industry standard digital packages will be used throughout.
