Hairdressing Diploma Level 1 at Colchester Institute

Course description

This programme is designed to provide you with basic skills and a starting point in your training to become a hairdresser. The programme covers a broad overview of hairdressing techniques at Level 1 to allow you to progress on to the Level 2 and 3 qualifications.

You are taught through a number of practical sessions and assessments in our industry standard salon, alongside classroom sessions and guided assignments. You will also engage in GEM and GAP activities to develop your English, maths and employability skills.

Course content

The Level 1 Hairdressing Diploma units may include the following:

  • Shampoo and Condition
  • Colour in the Hair and Beauty Sector
  • Introduction to the Hair and Beauty sector
  • Presenting a Professional Image
  • Styling Women’s Hair
  • Styling Men’s Hair
  • Plaiting and Twisting Hair
  • Colour Hair using Temporary Colour
  • Create a Hair and Beauty Image
  • Follow Health and Safety in a Salon
  • Working with Others
  • The Art of Colouring Hair

Entry requirements

Normally a minimum of 3 GCSEs (grades D-G) and an interview. Students should have an interest in hairdressing.

Future opportunities

Students could be employed as salon assistants within the hairdressing industry.

Students could progress to the Hairdressing Diploma Level 2, either full-time or as an apprentice.
