Course description

AS Course: The course is made up of 2 Units. Unit1 BUSS1: Planning and Financing a Business This unit introduces Business Studies by studying the activities involved in starting a small business. It gives a good overview of the various factors involved. The unit also involves financial planning and the essential financial concepts involved and the relationship of finance and other organisational departments. This Unit is examined in January and is worth 40% of the final AS grade Unit 2 BUSS2: Managing a Business This unit focuses on • Finance - using budgets, improving cash flow and profits • People - organisational design, recruitment, selection, training and motivation. • Operations Management – operational decisions, quality, customer service, suppliers and technology. • Marketing and Competition – designing and using an effective marketing mix, market conditions and competitiveness. This Unit is examined in June/July and is worth 60% of the final mark A2 Course: The grade from AS is carried forward and accounts for 50% of the final A Level grade. The course is made up of 2 Units Unit 3 BUSS3: Strategies for success This unit focuses on key strategies • Financial strategies and accounts- financial information, measuring performance and making investment decisions. • Marketing Strategies- analysing markets and selecting successful marketing strategies and developing marketing plans. • Operation strategies- operational issues, innovation, location and improving operational efficiency. • Human Resource strategies- workforce planning, adapting organisational structures and successful employee relations. This Unit is examined in January and is worth 25% of the final mark Unit 4 BUSS4: The Business Environment and Managing Change This unit focuses on • Mission, aims and objectives- purposes and nature of corporate strategies, stakeholder perspectives • External influences- the effects of changes in the economic. Political, social, ethical and technological environment and responses of business • Managing change- planning for change, leadership and corporate culture, making strategic decisions, managing change and decision making This Unit is examined through pre-release research tasks leading to the 1st section of a 2 section examination. The second section consists of essay style questions which are synoptic and therefore draw upon the knowledge from all 4 Units.

Entry requirements

Need a C in Maths and a B in English Language at GCSE.

Assessment

The course is assessed 100% by exam.

Financial information

There is the opportunity to attend Unit 1,2 and 3 Revision days and the Bank of England Museum.

Future opportunities

The skills are transferable to a wide range of careers and further study. Students go on to study courses in Law, Accountancy, Management, Economics, Hospitality and Applied Business. Employers and University welcome students with Business because it links with many diverse careers and further education courses
