Hairdressing Diploma Level 3 at New College Nottingham

Course description

If you already possess skills in hairdressing and are now ready to take the next step in achieving your dream job as a hair stylist, then this is a great course option for you.

Hairdressing is a creative and fulfilling career and with this qualification under your belt you are on your way to becoming part of the industry. 

This is a skilled profession which in Nottingham could see you earning up to £18k if you’re employed as a hairdresser or barber, and up to 32k if you manage your own salon.

This course will give you an excellent grounding in hairstyling in general, and will also teach you specialist techniques including advanced hair cutting and promotional hairdressing. It could even be the start of a freelance career as a mobile hair stylist.

Course content

Here at ncn we have specialist hair and beauty salons with all the latest facilities and equipment to enable you to gain hands-on experience. We also have commercial salons with real paying clients which is great for your customer service skills.
You can expect to learn a combination of hands-on skills alongside theory-based assignments to ensure you have a well rounded skills base right for the industry.

You will learn advanced hair cutting techniques, perming, hair colouring and colour correction, long hair designs, hair extensions, health and safety in the workplace, as well as general salon duties.

Photographic and session work is another module you will cover, giving you the opportunity to explore promotional hair styling and what’s involved.

Entry requirements

You must be an experienced hairdresser and have the following:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing at Merits or Distinctions, plus English and Maths at grade C and Science at A*- D. Functional Skills may be accepted in place of English and/or Maths.

Students must also be in related employment for 2 days a week and must attend college for the further 3 days. 

Adults 19+ who have industry experience BUT do not have the necessary qualifications can be invited in for interview.


Assessment is continuous throughout the programme and includes practical and theory-based elements.
