IT - Information Technology - Level 3 BTEC Extended Certificate at The Mirfield Free Grammar & Mirfield College

Course description

BTEC Information Technology (IT) is designed for those who are interested in the study of creating IT systems to manage and share information alongside other areas of study. Students will develop a common core of IT knowledge and study areas such as the relationship between hardware and software that form an IT system, managing and processing data to support business and using IT to communicate and share information.

Throughout the course students investigate the role of people and technology in organisations with a particular focus on the role of social media, the way in which it can be used and the potential pitfalls when using it for business purposes. Students will also design, create, test and evaluate a relational database solution and also build a website for a particular user need. Students will learn how the exciting, modern world of IT is constantly changing and helping individuals and society as a whole, through this practical and vocational course.

Unit 6 – Website Development

Entry requirements

Grade 4 in GCSE English Language

*All subject specific entry requirements are in addition to the General Entry Requirements


Unit 1 - Externally assessed examination = 33%

Unit 2 - 10 hour external assessment = 25%

Unit 3 - Internally assessed coursework = 25%

Unit 6 - Internally assessed coursework = 17%

Financial information

16-19 Bursary Fund

This scheme was introduced by the Government to help students study. Contributions and payments ‘in kind’ have been made to students to help with their individual identified needs, such as:

   •   Travel

   •   Stationery costs and packs

   •   Books and revision guides

   •   Educational trips/residential trips

   •   University Open Day visit costs

   •   Employment/apprenticeship opportunities


Bursaries are available to students in the following categories:



Category One:

Students who are identified by the government at ‘most vulnerable’ will be eligible for a guaranteed bursary of £1,200.

Category Two:

Family income is below threshold for working tax credits/free school meals.

Category Three:

Students who have an extreme financial barrier, mitigating circumstances and/or a short-term specific educational or independent living cost.

Applications will be issued during Summer 2018 for students to return on Enrolment Day.

There are a range of employment opportunities in the field of IT such as software development for national companies, systems analysis, web design and network technician posts in various companies and local education authorities.
