Art & Design - GCE A Level at The Mirfield Free Grammar & Mirfield College

Course description

The A Level Art and Design course is ideal for those with a creative career in mind and who want to study related degrees at university. Students will develop their skills and strengths in painting, drawing, print, textiles and sculpture. They will have the chance to discover and experiment with a wide range of media, study art history and contemporary artists. Students will also be able to make use of the Sixth Form Art Studio which is specifically dedicated to A Level Art and Design students and will be able to study in an environment conducive to study both during and outside timetabled lessons.

Course content

Year 12 will begin with a foundation style portfolio of work. Students will develop skills and techniques from a range of starting points. During this period students will cover the assessment objectives to make sure that they understand the rigours of the linear course. The year will also include a visit to a gallery or museum to see work first hand. Year 13 will begin Component 1 using what they have learnt in the foundation period to drive their progress. Students will develop their own investigation and personal response into an area of art that interests them. This will also include a 3000 word personal study which relates to their practical investigation.

Entry requirements

Grade 4 in GCSE Art or Pass in BTEC Art

*All subject specific entry requirements are in addition to the General Entry Requirements

Assessment

Component 1 = 60%

Component 2 = 40%

Financial information

16-19 Bursary Fund

This scheme was introduced by the Government to help students study. Contributions and payments ‘in kind’ have been made to students to help with their individual identified needs, such as:

   •   Travel

   •   Stationery costs and packs

   •   Books and revision guides

   •   Educational trips/residential trips

   •   University Open Day visit costs

   •   Employment/apprenticeship opportunities

 

Bursaries are available to students in the following categories:

 

Category One:

Students who are identified by the government at ‘most vulnerable’ will be eligible for a guaranteed bursary of £1,200.

Category Two:

Family income is below threshold for working tax credits/free school meals.

Category Three:

Students who have an extreme financial barrier, mitigating circumstances and/or a short-term specific educational or independent living cost.

Applications will be issued during Summer 2018 for students to return on Enrolment Day.

Future opportunities

Students who have been successful in their A Level Art and Design course have accepted offers onto applicable degree courses, or have completed studies at foundation art colleges and then proceeded to study at degree level. This course will be beneficial to anyone who is wishing to study or pursue careers in the art, design or craft fields; including fine art, architecture, interior and stage design.

Further information

A passion for and interest in art is essential for success in this subject. Those students with a strong independent work ethos and dedication are the most suitable for this demanding but enjoyable course.
