Travel and Tourism WJEC A Level at Poynton High School

Course description

Students will learn about the wider ethical, social and cultural dimensions of tourism, and they will understand its impact on the environment and the importance of sustainable development.
 
The course can be tailored to meet the needs of the group through the choice of units.

Course content

Learning Method:
 
The course allows students to gain a hands-on experience of the Travel and Tourism industry including visits, experience in travel and tourist organisations and visiting speakers. The course is made up of one coursework project (60%) and one examination (40%) in each year allowing students to complete the majority of their studies as project work in class. This reduces the pressure of the final examination.
 
The specification aims to help students understand the different elements which make up the tourism industry:
  • customers
  • stakeholders
  • technology
  • destinations
  • host communities

Entry requirements

  • 5 GCSEs at grade C or above.

Assessment

AS
– students must choose from:
 
  • T&T1 – Introducing Travel and Tourism - 1 ½ hour Written Paper (Compulsory)
  • T&T2 – Investigating Tourism Destinations - Portfolio Assessment OR
  • T&T4 – Working with Customers in Travel and Tourism – Portfolio Assessment
 
A2
- students must choose from:
 
  • T&T5 – Tourism Impacts and Tourism Developments - 2 hour Written Paper (Compulsory)
  • T&T6 –Trends and Issues in Travel and Tourism - Portfolio Assessment OR
  • T&T8 –Event Management in Travel and Tourism – Portfolio Assessment

Future opportunities

Travel and Tourism allows students to continue onto university courses, apprenticeships and careers in tourism, travel, catering, hospitality, human resources, customer service and events management.
