Physics - As and A2 at Downend School

Course description

Physics is the basis of most of the sciences. This course covers all the major areas of physics applied in the modern world, and builds upon what is covered at GCSE as well as introducing new and interesting topics (e.g. quantum physics, particle accelerators, etc.)

The course covers the topics thoroughly and to the standards required for university entry, but also tries to make the subject accessible.


At AS you will study 3 modules.

Module 1 covers Particles, quantum phenomena and electricity.

Module 2 covers Mechanics, materials and waves.


One of the units is compulsory (Unit 4 Fields and further mechanics) and the other is split in to Thermal and Nuclear Physics and a range of options (Astrophysics, Medical Physics, Applied Physics, Turning Points in Physics).

Entry requirements

AS: Grade B in GCSE Science

A2: Grade D in AS Physics
