Psychology A level at Sir Thomas Wharton Community College

Course description

Students study two units for AS and a further two units for A2. All units are tested by examination in January and June.

AS UNIT 1
This unit involves Cognitive and Developmental Psychology, as well as Research Methods. Areas covered include Human Memory, Attachments in early years and Psychological Research methods and analysis.

AS UNIT 2
This unit explores Physiological and Social Psychology and Psychopathology. Areas covered include Stress and Stress Management, Obedience and Conformity, and Psychological Abnormality.

A2 UNIT 3
During this unit students study three specialist areas in depth. Present topics include Aggression, Perception and Relationships.

A2 UNIT 4
This final unit builds on previous knowledge of Research Methods in psychology, and some work from Psychological Abnormality. Students will look at a Specified Mental disorder (Depression, Schizophrenia or Anxiety disorders), Psychology of Addictive behaviours and Media influence.

Future opportunities

Psychology is a good all round qualification to have and is highly regarded by many employers, however main areas which psychology is used are: Police Force, Education, Health services, Prison services, Advertising and Management.
