Biology A Level at Hitchin Boys' School
The Biology department are considering various options but at present we are most likely to follow OCR Biology A H420 and AS H020.
Biology A covers the key concepts in biology. Teaching of practical skills is integrated with theoretical topics and they are assessed through the written papers. If you take the 2 year A-level option there is also a practical endorsement that must be completed.
The A level course is split into 6 teaching modules and there are 3 exam papers plus a practical non exam endorsement to be reported separately at the end of the 2 year course. Class teachers will assess these practical skills in lessons. There are a minimum of 12 practical activities to be carried out over the 2 years. This is reported separately to the exam grade as a pass or fail.
The AS course no longer counts towards an A level but is a standalone qualification examined at the end of year 12. The examination consists of 2 papers both having 50% weighting. There is no coursework or practical endorsements but practical work will still be an essential part of lessons. The AS is designed to be interesting and challenging and will give you the applications needed for your biological studies.
If you decide to sit the AS and then want to continue to A-level you will sit another 3 papers at the end of year 13 plus a practical endorsement. The maths content of the course is integral and will form 10% of the marks available within the written examinations.
Minimum entry requirements to our Consortium are 5 A*-C at GCSE or equivalent, including Maths and English, for an advanced level or Level 3 course.
You are required to achieve a minimum of a grade B in the Biology triple science paper at GCSE or an A in both core and additional science in order to access this course.
