Physics A Level at Copleston High School

Course description

Advancing Physics is an exciting course that brings you right up to date with modern
Physics as well as covering the key elements of any Physics course. In the first year we cover work on the digital revolution, electronic sensors, materials, mechanics, waves and quantum behaviour. In the second year we study radioactivity, cosmology and space, gas theory, electromagnetic induction, electric fields and particle physics.

Course content

Teaching and learning uses discussion, experiments, computer work, groupwork, research and practice questions to develop your understanding of the topics which can then apply to the exams.

Entry requirements

4 AS levels – at least 5 grade Bs or equivalent in different GCSEs or other Level 2 courses. 3 AS levels – at least 5 grade Cs or equivalent in different GCSEs or other Level 2 courses. In addition, at least 2 grade Bs in GCSE Science or its equivalent.


Work is examined in two exams at the end of each year. In addition you will do a separate practical endorsement for experimental work. This is pass/fail and is based on the experimental work you do throughout the year.

Future opportunities

Physics is a highly valued qualification. Your problem solving skills can get you jobs both in science and engineering related jobs, medicine and medical physics as well as more general jobs, working in the city, banking, accountancy, law just to name a few.
