A Level Chemistry at Sir Charles Kao UTC
Studying the GCE in Chemistry should be a practical experience for students. This specification contains practical activities embedded within each unit, to reflect the nature of chemistry. This will increase students’ enjoyment and understanding of chemistry together with providing them with the skills needed to study science at higher levels.
Unit 1: The Core Principals of Chemistry
Unit 2: Applications of Core Principals of Chemistry
Unit 3: Chemistry Laboratory Skills
Unit 4: General Principles of Chemistry (i) – Rates, Equilibria and Further Organic Chemistry
Unit 5: General Principles of Chemistry (ii) – Transition Metals and Organic Nitrogen Chemistry
Unit 6: Chemistry Laboratory Skills II
Units 1, 2, 3 and 5 are assessed through a written examination
An exam paper style has been developed that can be consistently delivered and will be familiar to students. It includes three types of question parts:
1. Objective questions – used only where this will provide credible evidence of knowledge and skills
2. Structured short answers – for maths, How Science Works or theory
3. Longer answers worth six marks – to help provide stretch and challenge.
Units 3 and 6 are assessed through experimental design and execution.
