Sociology A Level at Thurston Community College
Unit 1 Education with Methods in Context:
This involves examining the purposes of education, differences in educational achievement between groups and social policy. Students will be expected to use a variety of research methods in investigating these topics.
Unit 2 Families & Households and Research Methods:
This involves examining contemporary family structures and issues in Britain, including domestic arrangements between couples, marriage and divorce, domestic abuse, childhood and family social policy. Students will also cover a wide range of current social issues outside the family by exploring the main research methods used in sociology.
In addition to covering the topics identified at AS, students will also study the following topics:
Beliefs in Society: This involves looking at the different theories of the origins of religion, role of religion in society, nature of different religious groups, including New Age movements and the significance of religion in contemporary society.
Crime and Deviance with Theory & Methods: This involves exploring explanations of crime and suicide. It also examines the workings of the police and courts. Theory and methods will be explored in the context of these issues and other areas of society.
B in Sociology or 5 in English Language
All units are externally examined in June Year 2.
Possible career paths in personnel, teaching, marketing, social work, local and central government, law, police service and the media.
