Further Mathematics AS Level at Woodroffe School

Course description

Further Maths is a highly regarded qualification and enables students to distinguish themselves in the university and employment market. It is much sought after by the top universities, especially from students who want to study Maths or a highly Maths based subject such as Engineering, Sciences, Economics or Computer Science. Even if your strength is in an apparently unconnected subject such as History, studying Further Maths can be very rewarding and develops logic and thinking skills to a high level. The course is available to those who also opt for Maths, but requires a high level of commitment and interest as it will account for two options work of time. For someone who enjoys Maths, it provides a challenge and a chance to explore new and more sophisticated maths concepts.

Course content

Compulsory modules of Further Pure Mathematics plus optional modules in Statistics, Further Mechanics and/ or Further Decision Maths.

Entry requirements

GCSE Grade 7 in Maths with a keen interest in the subject. Students must also successfully pass the ‘Bridge’ assessment in Maths.


For each module there is a ‘halfway’ assessment. Once modules are completed there is regular internal assessment using past exam questions to prepare students appropriately. Students purchase a past paper booklet for each module. All exams are linear. There is no coursework.

Further information

Woodroffe is an active member of the Further Maths Network, which co-ordinates opportunities to meet for study days, lectures and other activities. It also provides additional electronic support materials which many students find very interesting. Students taking Further Maths are actively encouraged to participate in the Senior Maths Challenge and also the Team Maths challenge.
