Prince's Trust Team Programme at YMCA Bedfordshire

Course description

YMCA Bedfordshire is a Delivery Partner for the Prince’s Trust 'Team' Programme. We have a wide mixture of people on Team including those who have left school with no qualifications, graduates, ex-offenders and people who have been through the care system – this mix is what makes the Programme unique. 

The Programme has an informal but structured approach to progression. During the 12 weeks, the Team members will experience:

  • A fun Induction week to break the ice
  • A residential opportunity including rock climbing, canoeing, raft building, orienteering and coasteering.
  • Working as a Team to complete a Community Project
  • Two week work placement
  • Next Steps week to plan for the future
  • Community challenges including 3 days with the Fire Service
  • A Final Presentation to celebrate their achievements

Course content

The Prince’s Trust Team Programme is made up of a number of stages that will take on a structured week by week format.

Week One – Induction
The first week of the Programme will help Team Members set their goals. It is also an opportunity to get to know their fellow Team members through fun activities including energisers and ice breakers as well as achieving certificates in Health & Safety and First Aid.

Week Two – Residential
This week is spent in Kent or Dorset doing various outdoor activities which can include low ropes assault course, canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing, orienteering, coasteering and raft building. The purpose of the week is to give Team members the opportunity to push their boundaries and prove to themselves that they are capable of more. This week will see the ‘storming’ phase through and helps them bond as a Team in preparation for the weeks ahead. This week is very popular with the young people with many previous team members saying it was the most challenging part of the course but also one of the best weeks.

Weeks Three to Six – Community Project
The aim of these weeks is to give something back to the community, whilst developing planning, communication and practical skills. The Team take ownership and decide on a beneficial cause for their project. During week 3 the team will plan for their project and have the task of fund raising to pay for the materials they require. Weeks 4 to 6 are used to complete the project which could be anything from developing an environmental garden in a Lower School to brightening up rooms at a Centre for adults with learning difficulties. 

Weeks Seven & Eight – Work Placement
These two weeks are spent on an individual work placement, which each Team member (with the support of staff) will find. Placements are designed to give Team members a taste of employment and to develop their skills in an area they hope to work. Some placements have even resulted in direct employment after the Programme.

Week Nine – Next Steps
The aim of this week is for Team members to develop an awareness of the skills necessary for employment and to set them on the right path for their chosen career option in employment, further education or training. Time is given to update CV’s, practice interview skills and make applications. We also bring in guest speakers from  colleges, training providers, volunteering options and representatives from various  career areas to give the Team professional advice to enable them to make decisions on how best to progress towards their future goals.

Week Ten – Team Challenge
This week is dedicated to helping others in the local community. The Team will decide who they are going to work with – for example, the elderly, children or adults with learning disabilities and plan a range of activities or trips. This gives the Team the opportunity to utilise the skills they have developed during the Programme and organise the activities they wish to do with their particular target groups. Previous Teams have taken groups to Woburn Safari park, set up pool competitions, ran quizzes and delivered arts and crafts sessions.

Week Eleven – Fire Week
Three days of this week will be spent with Bedfordshire & Luton Fire & Rescue Service. This is a fantastic opportunity that is rarely available to the public and further builds on teamwork skills. Team members spend time with a Watch taking part in activities such as running out the hoses cutting up cars, the BA shuffle and using the river rescue rafts. They also learn about road and fire safety and pass on their new valuable knowledge on fire awareness to the community.

Week Twelve – Final Presentation
During this week Team members review their personal progress throughout the 12 week journey and put the finishing touches to plans for their Final Presentation. Family, friends and agencies they have worked with come along to celebrate their achievements and see their certificates being presented.

A willingness to learn and work in a team are essential.


Through their achievements on Team, participants develop their skills, confidence and motivation and gain a nationally recognised City and Guilds Level 1 qualification in Personal Development and Contributing to the Community, also First Aid, Health and Safety certificates and more.

It has an excellent success rate, with over 75% of those completing the course moving into employment, education or training within 3 months.
