General Studies A Level at Bishop Heber High School

Course description

AS General Studies is compulsory in Year 12 within the Heber Sixth Form. It is delivered within an enrichment lesson on a Wednesday afternoon. We consider it vital that students are encouraged to maintain an up-to-date knowledge of current affairs and the world around them. In the past, it has proved vital in securing entry to university of some of our students.

Introduction: Aims of the specification

General Studies is related to all other A-level subjects and is designed to ensure you have an adequate balance in your A Levels. It can be vital in maximising your point score for university. High point scores at A-level attract bursaries from universities. AS General Studies is taught in Lower Sixth and A2 General Studies is available in Upper Sixth.


AS Level:

Unit 1: Challenges for Society: 25%

Unit 2: The Individual in Society: 25%

A2 Level:

Unit 3: Change and Progress: 25%

Unit 4: Beliefs, Values and Responsibilities: 25% 

Further information

Even if your university course does not require General Studies, you should take a longer-term view of its value on your CV.

It is very useful to have General Studies on your CV to show the broad nature of your education. Students studying only Sciences and Mathematics A-levels benefit by enhancing their essay writing skills which will be needed in their careers and university studies.
