Hairdressing NVQ Level 3 at West Lancashire College

Course description

This course covers all aspects of hair care and prepares students to continue their career in professional hair services.

For students who wish to continue to develop their professional hair skills.

Places will be given on production of a satisfactory reference or previous study history.

Succesful students will:

  • be creative and artistic

  • be able to work quickly and neatly
  • enjoy working with people
  • be interested in fashion and grooming.

Course content

The course offers students the opportunity to improve & develop further skills in: 

  • health and safety
  • promotion
  • consultation
  • style and dress hair
  • colour correction
  • colouring of hair
  • creative cutting
  • style and dress long hair
  • functional skills
  • develop and enhance creative hairdressing skills

All students must purchase an additonal kit from a preferred supplier prior to the start of the course. Costs will be discussed at enrolment and during the college induction. Students will be required to carry out treatments on the general public who book in as clients at our reception area. On occasion you will also need to provide a paying model for your practical assessments. 

Mandatory enrichment courses and trips will be available to full time students at an additional cost. Details will be available from the course coordinator at induction.

All students must wear the college uniform, which is:

  • Long smart black trousers (Purchased by student)
  • College tunic (Purchased from preferred supplier)
  • Low heeled full black smart shoes (Purchased by student)
  • Students will be required to remove all visible jewellery including facial piercing during all practical sessions (due to awarding body requirements) and have short nails with no nail polish.

Mobile phones must not be accessed in classrooms and salons unless permission has been sought from the course coordinator.

If the above is not adhered to you will be asked to leave the salons.

A certain level of manual dexterity will be required for this course.

 

Learners will undertake a period of work experience appropriate to your course as part of the programme of study.

Maths and English will be part of your programme of study and you will study qualifications in Maths and English, appropriate to your level of ability, alongside your chosen course.

Entry requirements

Students must have an NVQ or VRQ Level 2 Hairdressing qualification or equivalent.

All students will be interviewed to assess their eligibility for the course. Students must secure a work placement in a salon prior to the start of the course. Students should also be able to demonstrate a commitment to entering a career in the hairdressing industry and an understanding of the requirements of working in this area.

Students must be able to work effectively with others and be willing to carry out and receive all treatments. 

Assessment

Assessment is by practical observation, oral questioning, case studies, written essential knowledge papers. An internal/external verifier will assess all portfolio evidence and practical skills.

Future opportunities

Students who successfully complete the course are given support and guidance regarding potential career opportunities and further study opportunities during the course and at our annual careers and progression fair. These include hairstylist, cutting technician, colour specialist, salon manager. If you successfully complete a Level 3 course at West Lancashire College you are eligible to apply fopr the Level 4 Diploma in Management Practice and Advance Techniques in the Hair and Beauty Sector (subject to satisfactory interview).

This course will enhance employment prospects and provides scope for employment in Hairdressing Salons, Hair/Beauty Consultancies at senior level or as a Sales Person.
