Geography A Level *FEES PAYABLE* at Northampton High School

Course description

Within Human Geography students identify patterns within / between societies, seeking to explain contrasts and understand how people’s lives differ. Within Physical Geography students develop a detailed understanding of earth processes and how they create distinctive, beautiful landforms, whilst also considering the potentially devastating effects of natural events.

In the AS year students must undertake a short residential field course to complete a fieldwork investigation. A2 students will complete a topical issues evaluation, based upon an advanced information booklet.

AS Level
Unit 1
Physical & Human Geography
Rivers; cold environments; population change; health issues.

Unit 2
Geographical Skills
Investigative skills; cartographic skills; graphical skills; statistical skills; ICT skills.

A2 Level
Unit 3
Contemporary Geographical Issues
Plate tectonics; weather and climate hazards; world cities; development and globalisation.

Unit 4b
Geographical Issue Evaluation
Considering evidence from different viewpoints; recommending ways to manage issues to minimize conflict.

Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements for AS Geography, although prior study at GCSE would be a major advantage.

Graduate geographers are considered very employable; example careers include environmental consultancy, construction / property law, marketing, hazard management and banking. Geography also combines well with scientific courses; successful veterinary science and medical students have previously studied Geography at Northampton High School.
