Psychology at Ysgol Gyfun Dyffryn Teifi

Course description

The course is offered mainly via video conferencing, in association with Coleg Meirion Dwyfor. The subject will be of interest to a wide range of students and will develop the capacity to identify, understand and evaluate key ideas from Psychological theory and methodology. The course will also provide students with the opportunity to develop skills such as evaluation and research, coupled with critical thinking in terms of the application of Psychology to cultural, social and contemporary issues.

Approaches in Psychology
The assumptions, strengths, limitations, similarities, differences and applications to
theory and therapy of: Behaviourist Approach, Biological Approach, Cognitive Approach and Psychodynamic Approach.
PY2
Psychology: Core Studies and Applied
Research Methods
In Section A and Section B candidates learnabout 10 key studies from Psychology in
Section C, candidates apply knowledge of
research methods to a novel stimulus.
PY3
Research methods and issues in
Research
This unit develops the knowledge,
application and evaluation of research
methods, data analysis and issues in
research.
PY4
Controversies, Topics and Applications
Students study six controversial issues.
They analyse and interpret evidence in order to demonstrate that they can resolve
conflicting evidence. Five topics and five
applications are studied with a focus on
describing, analysing and evaluating
theories, findings and conclusions.

Assessment

PY1 1¼ hour examination - Five compulsory questions, each worth 12 marks
PY2 1¾hour examination - Section A - three compulsory questions, each worth 8 marks. Section B - three compulsory each worth 8 marks. Section C - one question from a choice of two, worth 12 marks
PY3 1½ hour examination Sections A and B contain a series of compulsory questions. Section C - two short essays from a choice of three.
PY4 2½ hours examination - Section A Controversies - one question from a choice of two. Section B Topics - one question from a choice of five. Section C Applications - one question on each of the options

Future opportunities

AS Psychology offers a basis for the continued study of Psychology and related fields, including opportunities for employment in the health and care sector, sports management, media, business studies, education and counselling.
