A2 Level English Literature at Nether Stowe School

Course description

AQA English Literature A level is a 2 year course that will develop your analytical and essay writing skills that will underpin and support the work you do in all subjects.


Course content

You will study a very wide range of different texts from different time periods that are written in different genres (novels, plays and poems).

The text choices offer you a broad and in depth experience of English Literature that will benefit you in all areas of your education.

The wide selection of texts also ensures that you will always be studying something you enjoy and that the course does not become repetitive.

Entry requirements

Grade 6 or above in both GCSE English Language and Literature and have an enthusiasm for literature and creative thinking.


You will sit 2 exams, each worht 40%. 

One is a closed book exam and one is an open book exam in which you will be given extracts to enable you to answer the questions.

The remaining 20% is a Non-Examined Assessment for which you will produce an extended essay.

Future opportunities

You could take this course with other advanced level courses or equivalent to prepare for higher education in English studies or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to English Literature such as a Teacher, Journalist, Author or Poet. The course will also help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
