A-Level History at West Kent College

Course description

Learn why things happened and the effect that they had, with A-Level History. Throughout this course you will critically evaluate the world around you and gain skills that will be beneficial for a range of careers.

Year 1

• From Pitt to Peel: Britain 1783-1853
• British period study: British Government in the Age of Revolution
• Peel and the use of Reform 1832-1853
• Critical use of evidence in investigating and assessing historical questions, problems and issues
• Non–British period study: Russia 1894-1941
• Analyse and evaluate historians’ interpretations of aspects of the course they have studied

Year 2

• Thematic study and historical interpretations
• Civil Rights in the USA 1865-1992
• Thematic study over a period of at least 100 years
• Evaluate interpretations of the specified key events, individuals or issues.
• Topic based 3000-4000 word essay based on the independent investigation of historical issue.

Entry requirements

You will need five GCSEs at Grades A*-C/9-4 including English and Mathematics, and Grade B/6 or above in a related subject.

Assessment

Assessment is ongoing through homework assignments as well as verbal feedback and discussion during classroom based activities. Work is marked according to the course mark schemes and assigned guideline grades to enable students to chart their progress. Some work is completed through timed assignments to enable students to practice exam skills with time constraints There are two exam papers for History in year 1. Mock exams are taken in February.

Future opportunities

Upon completing this course you will be equipped to move on to university, a higher apprenticeship or work. History is an ideal qualification for entry to degree level study in history, humanities or social science subjects.
