Sociology AS/A2 at Onslow St Audrey`s School

Course description

If you wish to challenge common
sense ideas and question how
society works, have enthusiasm, drive and the ability to
discover new forms of learning then sociology is for you.
Sociology is the study of individuals and groups in society and
AS Level Sociology looks at the family; education and how it
has changed and sociological research methods. We then go on
to study Crime, Global Development and Sociological theory
at A2. Crime and deviance is a fascinating topic focusing on
different explanations of criminal and deviant behaviour. Global
Development looks at how and why there are differences
between developed and developing countries and what causes
some countries to remain poor. We compare the experiences of
different social groups, for example the impact of social class on
education, and the impact of gender on crime. Finally we look at
the ‘big picture’ - how sociological ‘theories’ view society at large
which crosses over into all the topics you could ever study within
Sociology’s insights into social processes provide a useful contrast
to Business Studies, Computing and Sciences. It can serve as a
qualification for entry into a wide range of Higher Education
degree courses and is a must for such degrees as social work. It is
highly relevant to any occupation that involves working with people
including such careers as business management, human resources,
advertising, events management, armed forces, police force, health
service and politics
