English Literature at The Joseph Whitaker School
Like all A-Levels, the A-Level English Literature syllabus is composed of two parts. The first part, the Advanced Subsidiary (AS), is taken in Year 12 and this can then be combined with the A2 part, taken in Year 13, to form the full Advanced Level qualification. The standard of the AS Level is higher than GCSE but not as high as A2 Level.
Students following the course will study four texts in Year 12 and four more in Year 13. The texts will cover the three genres (poetry, prose, drama) and will be drawn from a wide range of historical periods from the 14th Century to the 21st Century.
Assessment will be by a combination of coursework, open book exam (you can take the text into the exam with you) and closed book exam (you can’t!).
5 A*-C in GCSE subjects . Grade B in chosen subjects
