Creative and Digital Media Apprenticeship at Preston's College

Course description

The creative media industries are rapidly evolving and converging. New entrants will need to have an understanding of this convergence as well as general knowledge of the industries. Employers look for work-ready individuals who have good literacy and numeracy, strong IT skills and a good understanding of what it takes to work their way up in creative media – including the capacity to work hard, efficiently and in teams. Many roles require both technical and creative abilities. This Apprenticeship offers a combination of qualifications, that will equip you with these skills and the knowledge you need to work in the industry either in film, TV, web and graphics.

Course content

During this course you will work with an employer to gain experience of the industry while attending college one day a week. Units of study include:

– Awareness of employment in the creative media sector
– Contribute to good working relationships
– Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
– Communicating and presenting ideas in the creative media sector
– Awareness of converging digital technology in the creative media sector
– Professional behaviour in the creative media sector
– Contribute ideas for productions
– Creative media industry awareness

You will also undertake Key/Functional Skills and a Technical Certificate alongside your apprenticeship qualification.

Entry requirements

All Apprenticeships require an initial assessment, interview and employment in the industry. At Level 2 you’ll need four GCSEs at grade D or above including English and maths. At level 3 you will need a Level 2 qualification in the subject or 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C including English and maths at grade C or above with at least a D in the remaining subject.


Assessment is carried out through a variety of methods including coursework, exams, oral questioning, portfolios of evidence, practical demonstrations, practical and written examinations. Students on Apprenticeship programmes are also required to study functional skills such as maths, English and computing, as well as any additional qualifications that their employment needs.

Future opportunities

On completion of the Level 2 Apprenticeship, you may wish to progress to the Level 3 Apprenticeship which will further equip you with the necessary skills and qualifications required for working in the creative industries.
