Course description

The Extended Diploma in Music technology is a Level 3 course that provides a broad introduction to all aspects of the Music industry. You will be gaining valuable practical skills, getting relevant qualifications and preparing yourself for working or progressing on to university.

In order to enhance your experience on the course you can expect to take various music related trips to concerts and venues, hear from guest industry speakers and join up with professional musicians through our mentor scheme; Arts Emergency. As well as be expected to sequence and record music you will be offered numerous opportunities to perform in the college and in venues outside through our links with local organisations.

Course content

On this course you will gain valuable experience of the music industry working on a wide variety of self-contained projects spanning computer sequencing, live performance, audio engineering and concert promotion. You will be taught through a combination of practical workshops, individual research and written work, creative composition and song writing, group projects and presentations and tutor observations of your practical skills. Your tutors bring a broad range of Music Industry experience to the classroom offering you specialist expertise in studio recording, sequencing and performing.

Entry requirements

Level 3 Diplomas are for students with 4 A-C grades at GCSE.


The Level three Edexcel BTEC Extended Diploma in Music technology is a qualification that consists of 5 mandatory units plus optional units that provide a combined total of 180 credits.

There are a variety of progression routes you can expect to take on completion of this course ranging from: Live Sound Engineering, Live backline management, Studio engineering and mastering, Music production and composition, Performance, Music marketing and Music Industry Management.
